After Development Lectures 2021

Organised by ERASME, the After Development Lectures will take place online between 13-17th of December 2021. The event is a collaboration between ERASME and researchers from several universities and research institutes in Europe, the US and Australia. The aim of the lectures is to present recent work in the field of strong sustainability, with a focus on the “beyond growth/development” narrative. As an increasing number of academics and practitioners call for a shift to socioecological wellbeing within planetary boundaries, the lectures will address some of the solutions, pathways and theories designed for this transition and will foster discussions on their applicability and coherence.

The event is structured into five thematic days. Day 1 will be led by Cécile Batisse (CERDI/ERASME) and is dedicated to Post-growth, with presenters addressing topics such as degrowth, relationship-to-profit, environmental justice. Day 2 is led by Arnaud Diemer (UCA/ERASME) and takes a look at Economic Systems at different scales, where speakers will address the concepts of Circular Economy, Bioeconomy, Smart Village Development, but also methodologies to assess CBE, such as participatory system dynamics modelling. Day 3 is led by Claudiu Eduard Nedelciu (ERASME) and is dedicated to Food Systems. It addresses topics such as food sovereignty, redefining food as a commons and human right, agroecology, and other traditional forms of agriculture. Day 4 will be led by Arnaud Diemer (UCA/ERASME) and addresses the Pathways required for a strong sustainability transition, focusing on development after capitalism, a nature-inclusive economy, resilience transformation and the collapse of complex societies. Last but not least, Day 5 is led by Nathalie Spittler (BOKU/ERASME) and will tackle Energy systems, with speakers presenting on the relationship between energy and the economy, the energy transition and its material footprint, energy cooperatives and citizen-led energy projects in Europe.
